The Oscars were full of trending themes throughout the evening on the Red Carpet. Red being one of key major trends that shone through.
Traditionally red dresses are a big no for on the red carpet because it is seen to either clash or tone in with the red carpet. However stylists and stars seemed to go against the rules this year and take the plunge to stand in their red dresses, whether it be classic, sexy or modern, most of these looks ended up on the BEST DRESSED.
1. RED TREND
Sandra Bullock in Vera Wang - Sandra looks stunningly classic in this Vera Wang dress, the shape fits her perfectly and I love the simple square cut out plunge detail. The make up and hair style were so understated that I feel the look could've had more statement accessories such as a necklace or earrings to make her stand out more. I thought Sandra may of gone for a contrast metallic clutch at least to add a bit of pop to the outfit as the dress itself was quite a simple design, although no one can deny that the dress itself has a beautiful structure and fits her to perfection. Thankyou Sandra Bullock for looking so classically beautifully!
Penelope Cruz in L'Wren Scott - Penelope Cruz has always been about showing her best assets but she had another reason to show her curves this year at the Oscars because just 4 weeks ago she has given birth to her new baby son. As usual Penelope was glowing with her beaming smile, she was supporting her husband Javier Bardem for the nomination for the Best Actor award for his role in Biutiful. Although Penelope looks amazing this soon after the birth of her son I am not a huge fan of this particular dress on her. I think the dress would've been fabulous in just a simple fabric with slightly less embellishment because there is so much cleavage, the proportions would be better balanced if the sequin detail would have been concentrated in the lower half of the dress. Thankyou Penelope Cruz for looking naturally amazing!
Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein - One of the first looks we saw on the Red Carpet for the evening and it still stuck in our minds. The Calvin Klein dress was custom made for her by Francisco Costa. People wouldn't normally expect to see such a simple dress worn to the Oscars but the fire engine red colour, along with the Hollywood style hair and makeup it works perfectly. Jennifer's figure is a huge part to play in the standout dress but Calvin Klein can't seem to put a foot wrong when making custom dresses for actresses on the red carpet. Thankyou Jennifer Lawrence for making a simple cut dress look so sexy!
Anne Hathaway in Valentino Haute Couture - Obviously the first of many outfits that Anne wore throughout the night and I feel that she looks amazing. Some people have had other views about this dress especially from the back view with the ruffle detail, however I feel that her hair, jewellery and make up set the dress off perfectly. The wrong hair and accessories could've made the dress look old fashioned and over the top but it is correctly balanced out with the softness of the hair and makeup with the modern pop of the matching red lips. Rachel Zoe who styled Anne throughout the evening with all of her looks is the queen of red carpet dressing and the accessories are her forte, again she has proved herself with all of Anne's looks at the Oscars. The colour of the dress pops against the red carpet colour instead of blending in, this was so important as all eyes were on Anne throughout the entire awards as she was the co-host of the Oscars. Again another strong look that we had seen on the Red Carpet was the figure hugging hourglass shape, Anne could've looked tacky in the colour and the fitted design but the ruffle detail at the back of the dress gives it that classic Hollywood feel but still is sexy enough to show off her figure. Thankyou Anne Hathaway you never disappoint and are not afraid to try something different!
Scarlett Johansson in Dolce and Gabbana - The colour of this dress was what made it for Scarlett, in black it could've looked like any normal awards dress but the burgundy lace gave it a romantic, sexy feel. There has been many mixed reviews about Scarlett in this dress but I just cannot understand why. Her body looks phenomenal, the colour against her skin tone couldn't of been more perfect and her hair and make up look flawless. Some people have said that her hair looks to messy but I feel that this is what makes the dress look sexy, this is what Dolce and Gabbana are all about, not old Hollywood glamour, which a lot of people would've done by putting the hair into a sleek backcombed bee hive. Scarlett is a young actress and I don't think she should've done anything different, it was so refreshing to see lace in a modern colour rather than the traditional black or cream that we would normally expect to see in lace. Thankyou Scarlett Johansson for always wearing the dress and not letting the dress wear you!
